Sanger was initially hesitant to take on the project. He had never produced a film before, and he was worried about how the public would react to a film about such a controversial subject.
But Lynch was passionate about the project, and he convinced Sanger to give it a try. Sanger eventually agreed, and the two men set out to make a film that would not only be a powerful drama, but also a groundbreaking work of cinema.
The making of The Elephant Man was a challenging process. Sanger and Lynch had to overcome a number of obstacles, including the difficulty of finding an actor who could convincingly play Merrick.
Eventually, they found John Hurt, who gave a tour-de-force performance as Merrick. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it went on to win eight Academy Awards.
In his memoir, Making the Elephant Man, Sanger recounts the challenges and rewards of making the film. He also provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of Joseph Merrick, and the impact that his story has had on people around the world.
Making the Elephant Man is a must-read for anyone who is interested in film production, disability, or the human condition. It is a powerful and moving story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
