Inaugural Lecture: Unlocking the Secrets of the Cosmos
On Thursday 28 November 2024, Professor Emeritus Dr. Stephen Hawking delivered an inaugural lecture at the University of Cambridge. The lecture was titled "The Origin and Fate of the Universe" and was attended by over 1,000 people.
Hawking discussed the latest in astrophysics and cosmology, focusing on the Big Bang, the formation of galaxies, and the possible existence of extraterrestrial life. He also shared his thoughts on the future of humanity and the importance of space exploration.

Hawking's lecture was a fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of some of the biggest questions facing humanity. He is one of the world's leading cosmologists and his insights into the nature of the universe are invaluable.
The Big Bang
Hawking began his lecture by discussing the Big Bang. The Big Bang is the scientific theory that the universe began about 13.8 billion years ago with a very hot, dense state. This state then expanded and cooled, forming the galaxies and stars that we see today.
Hawking discussed the evidence for the Big Bang, including the cosmic microwave background radiation. The cosmic microwave background radiation is a faint glow of light that fills the universe and is thought to be the leftover radiation from the Big Bang.
Hawking also discussed some of the mysteries surrounding the Big Bang. For example, we still do not know what caused the Big Bang or what happened before the Big Bang.
The Formation of Galaxies
After the Big Bang, the universe began to cool and expand. As it cooled, gravity caused the matter in the universe to clump together and form galaxies. Galaxies are vast collections of stars, gas, and dust.
Hawking discussed the different types of galaxies and how they formed. He also discussed the role of dark matter in the formation of galaxies. Dark matter is a mysterious substance that does not emit any light or radiation but is thought to make up about 27% of the universe.
The Search for Extraterrestrial Life
One of the most fascinating questions in science is whether or not there is life beyond Earth. Hawking discussed the search for extraterrestrial life and the different ways that we might find it.
Hawking said that he believes that there is a good chance that there is extraterrestrial life. He pointed out that the universe is vast and that there are billions of stars in our galaxy alone. It is statistically improbable that Earth is the only planet that supports life.
Hawking also discussed the different ways that we might find extraterrestrial life. He said that we might find it through SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence),which is a scientific effort to detect signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. We might also find extraterrestrial life through space exploration.
Hawking's lecture was a fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of some of the biggest questions facing humanity. He is one of the world's leading cosmologists and his insights into the nature of the universe are invaluable.
If you are interested in learning more about the cosmos, I encourage you to read Hawking's book, "The Origin and Fate of the Universe." In this book, Hawking discusses the latest discoveries in astrophysics and cosmology in a clear and accessible way.
